Banana Shire Council engaged CarbonetiX to develop a greenhouse gas inventory for the 2012/13 financial year. This involved the measurement of emissions generated by the Council’s landfills, wastewater treatment plants, fleet, stationery fuels, street lighting and electricity consumption. The results of the FY2012/13 greenhouse gas inventory were compared to a baseline inventory developed in 2009 to gauge the environmental performance of the Council and identify prioritised areas to target emissions reduction.
Objectives
- To improve the reporting processes of Council’s green house gas emissions
- To identify and document opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by Council operations
- To empower stakeholders to act on the recommendations proposed by CarbonetiX
Opportunities
A range of opportunities were identified in the FY2012/13 greenhouse gas assessment, which included:
- Implementation of robust emissions data collection methodologies
- Installation of energy-saving technology at Council operated wastewater treatment plants
- Mitigation of methane emissions from Council operated landfills
- Replacement of general fleet with fuel-efficient or hybrid vehicles
- Upgrading streetlights with energy efficient lamp technology (i.e. LED)
Benefits
The range of opportunities identified by the FY2012/13 greenhouse gas assessment enables the following key benefits:
- Stream-lined emissions data collection and reporting processes
- Reduced electricity bills
- Reduced CO2 emissions
- Reduced operational costs
Brendan Wogandt, Environmental Sustainability Advisor, said “Banana Shire Council engaged CarbonetiX to develop a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory for the 2012/13 financial year. The data from the Inventory has been crucial to assisting Council in developing sustainable policies and guiding future projects. I found working with CarbonetiX to be very productive and was highly impressed by their efficiency and attention to detail. I was very satisfied with the Inventory delivered and I would certainly consider working with the team from CarbonetiX again in the future.”
